Most n8n installs I see run on SQLite with no backups and no updates, behind a default config. Mine are built to stay up:
- n8n in Docker, behind a reverse proxy with free auto-renewing SSL (HTTPS)
- PostgreSQL database instead of SQLite, for reliability
- Automated daily backups of workflows and credentials
- Secure configuration: encryption key, firewall, no exposed ports
- Optional queue mode with Redis and workers for heavy workloads
- Optional infrastructure as code (Terraform) on AWS, so it's repeatable
Works on: AWS (EC2, Lightsail), DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Hostinger VPS, Google Cloud, Azure, or your own Linux server.

Yes, you own the server, which keeps your data private. I'll recommend an affordable option; small setups run comfortably on a $5–10/month VPS.
Can you migrate my n8n Cloud workflows?
Yes. I can export your workflows and credentials and move them to your self-hosted instance, then test everything.
Will my n8n stay updated?
Standard and Premium include a simple, safe update procedure. I also offer monthly maintenance if you'd rather not touch it.
Is self-hosted n8n allowed for business use?
n8n's Sustainable Use License allows self-hosting for your own internal business use. I'll point you to the license so you can confirm it fits your case.
