Emergency Call Handler 999
NHS • Fulltime
Jun 2024 - Dec 2024 • 6 mos
I worked as an Emergency Call Handler within the UK 999 ambulance service, handling high-pressure emergency situations and responding to urgent calls from members of the public in distress. My role required gathering accurate information quickly, assessing situations calmly, and communicating clearly with callers who were often anxious, upset, or in crisis. I was responsible for following structured protocols, prioritising urgency, and ensuring critical information was relayed efficiently to emergency response teams. A key part of the role involved maintaining calm, professional communication under extreme pressure, while providing reassurance and clear instructions to callers until help arrived. Strong listening skills, emotional control, and the ability to make fast but accurate decisions were essential. This experience developed my ability to communicate clearly in high-stress situations, think logically under pressure, and remain composed while dealing with sensitive and emotionally charged conversations. It also strengthened my active listening, empathy, and attention to detail. Overall, this role significantly enhanced my communication, clarity, and emotional intelligence skills, which directly support my work in CV writing, cover letters, content rewriting, and emotional support services.
Supply Teacher
EduCare Learning • Fulltime
Nov 2023 - Aug 2024 • 9 mos
I worked as a Supply Teacher in secondary education within the UK school system, delivering lessons across a range of subjects for students in Years 7–11, with a strong focus on the languages department, particularly English and Spanish. In this role, I was responsible for delivering pre-planned lessons and ensuring continuity of learning in the absence of regular teaching staff. I adapted quickly to different classroom environments and year groups, maintaining structure, engagement, and a positive learning atmosphere across varied subjects including English, Spanish, science, and maths. My core responsibilities included delivering clear and structured lessons, explaining subject material in an accessible way, managing classroom behaviour, and ensuring students remained focused and productive throughout the lesson. I also provided feedback on classwork and student performance where required, supporting their understanding and progress in line with curriculum expectations. In addition, I set and supervised homework tasks, reinforced learning objectives, and ensured students understood instructions and expectations clearly. A key part of my role involved communication—breaking down complex topics into simple, understandable explanations tailored to different age groups and learning abilities. This experience strengthened my ability to communicate effectively, think quickly in dynamic environments, and maintain professionalism under pressure. It also developed my skills in organisation, adaptability, and written and verbal communication—particularly through explaining ideas clearly and supporting structured learning outcomes. Overall, this role required consistency, clarity, patience, and strong communication skills, all of which directly translate into my current work in CV writing, cover letters, content rewriting, and emotional support communication.
